Guideline: Using a 'T' Shape Corkscrew

2024-02-06

The simplest corkscrew is a "T" shape, just a spiral metal "worm" with a handle on top. However, a travel corkscrew comes in two parts: a worm with a plastic handle covered by a sheath that narrows at one end. The sheath will pull or twist open, exposing the worm.

1. If necessary, open the corkscrew. Some simple corkscrews have handles that fold down to hold against the worm. If your tools look like this, simply lift them upward until the tool forms a "T" shape.

2. If you are using a travel bottle opener, slide the sheath into the handle. The plastic handle on the top of the worm should have a hole about the diameter of the handle. Slide the narrow end of the sheath into the hole, stopping when it no longer slides easily. The corkscrew should now be in a "T" shape.

3. Screw the worm into the cork. Place the tip of the worm just outside the center of the cork and twist slightly clockwise. Continue twisting it in until the last circle of worms is sticking out of the cork.

4. Pull the cork out. Grasp the "T" shaped handle and slowly pull upward to remove the cork. Gently pull, twist, and shake the cork from side to side until it comes out completely.
When removing the cork, hold the neck of the bottle with your free hand.
After removing the worms, unscrew the cork from the worms.
If you are using a travel corkscrew, remove the sheath from the hole when finished and place it back on the worm.
